AZIENDA AGRICOLA ROAGNA, Barbaresco Biodynamic
Luca Roagna is a “rising star” in Piemont, only in his late 20’s, he has revamped the whole winery and, in just a few years, dramatically increased the quality of the vineyards and wines. Luca works with a biodynamic approach and with very traditional methods, which in Piemonte means: extremely long and gentle maceration (up to 4 months) with no bâtonnage, just pushing gently the cap down without crashing it, and waiting for it to “melt” in the juice, then follows an extremely long ageing in large barrels. Only natural yeasts are used.
Luca describes his land as ‘Natural vineyards’ where everything is done to ensure biodiversity exists; no chemicals are ever used and a multitude of vegetal varieties are let to grow freely between the Nebbiolo vines.
Barbaresco Asili spends an average of 4 to 6 years in medium-sized oak casks, before bottling. The attractive garnet-red colour leads to a rich nose with distinct aromas of black cherries, sweet tobacco, wild rose, spices and tarry hints. The palate is rich and velvety and very well structured, it develops delicate flavours of cherry, small wild berries, game and spices.
“The Barbaresco Asili is an incredibly silky yet powerful Barbaresco graced with superb purity. This is classic Asili; from the expressive, sweet bouquet to the soft fruit and the cashmere-like finish. Still quite young, this utterly graceful and convincing Barbaresco Asili is terrific. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. ” Wine Advocate
