FRAMINGHAM Vineyards, Marlborough
Framingham is a quality-driven boutique producer located in Marlborough. Winemaker, Dr. Andrew Hedley has been lauded by influential critics like Jancis Robinson for his mastery of the aromatic varietals, Riesling in particular. One of the really exciting things about Framingham is that they are increasingly experimental and less interventionist in their approach, and are making more terroir and vintage-expressive wines every year.
The success of recent vintages of the Sauvignon Blanc may be attributable to this less interventionist approach, and the style is diverging from the raft of one-dimensional, identikit Sauvignons that have become ubiquitous over the last ten years. In a recent Decanter Magazine tasting, Framingham’s Sauvignon Blanc won Christelle Guibert’s top spot for New Zealand Sauvignon.
F-Series refers to a special project of micro-bottlings that winemaker Andrew Hedley has created.
‘I recently had the chance to try a series of utterly remarkable New Zealand wines.
They’re from Framingham in Marlborough, a producer whose points of difference are that they are experts in Riesling, and also in sweet wines. As a set of wines, these were quite stunning. The Pinot Noir is one of New Zealand’s best, and I’d really like to try it again: I get nervous about dishing out such a high score. But this wasn’t just a quick taste, so I am happy to go high.’ Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak
F-S Pinot Noir: ‘Aromatically thrilling: sweet cherry fruit with complex herb and spice elements. Pure, elegant and beguiling. The palate is superbly poised and elegant with sweet cherry fruit offset with a mineral/spice dimension and subtle green notes. A really beautiful wine that’s quite profound. 96/100’ Jamie Goode
