With a vineyard planted in the mid-1950`s, Paul Osicka has some of the oldest vines in the Heathcote GI. He began commercial production in the seventies so is a regional and industry veteran. Whilst certainly on the outer reaches of the Heathcote GI, the unirrigated vines grown on sandy loam soil over quartz and red ironstone gravel, are hand pruned and hand picked and as with the very best wineries of the region (Jasper Hill springing to mind), the vineyard is managed according to organic principles without the use of herbicides or insecticides. The vineyard is deliberately kept to a low yield ensuring the berries are smaller and more intense in colour and flavour.
