PITHON-PAILLÉ, Saint-Lambert du Lattay Organic
Jo Pithon is a well-known figure in the Loire. His epynomous estate was created in 1978, and was undoubtedly as highly regarded as Baumard and Pierre-Bise. Sadly though, Jo lost most of his estate in 2008, due to financial difficulties and when he could no longer agree with his financier.
Jo Pithon’s dream has always been to set up a ‘micro-négociant’ venture, similar to those in Burgundy and the Rhone Valley, producing top quality wines, by vinifying and aging wines made from Chenin and Cabernet Franc, using the different soil-types and terroirs of the region.
At the beginning of 2008, Jo Pithon and his wife Isabelle, decided to take the plunge again, and with Joseph Paillé, Isabelle’s son, and Wendy Paillé, his wife, they created the Pithon-Paillé venture.
Jo had retained 5 hectares of his original estate, notably the famous plot at Les Treilles, and today the estate has grown to 12 hectares. To complement the fruit from their own vineyards,
the Pithons and Paillés work hand in hand with local growers, carefully selecting the plots, with a preference for organic production, supervising in the vineyards throughout the year and deciding on the harvest date. The winery has recently moved to Saint-lambert du Lattay.
Anjou Rouge ‘Mozaik’ comes from Cabernet Franc grown on limestone and schist soils, it spent 10 months in 2 to 6 year-old barrels. The nose is very inviting with ripe red berries, red pepper and earthy hints. The red fruit dominated palate is seamless and ends with juicy notes and bright acidity.
