AA TERRE DI PIETRA, CRISTIANO ALBERTINI, Veneto – Organic
Despite strong opposition from her father, Laura Albertini achieved her dream of being a wine producer at the tender age of twenty-five in 2005. In just over ten years, she has left a wonderful legacy – she tragically passed away at the beginning of March 2017, leaving behind her husband, Cristiano and their two young children.
The cantina is located in Marcellise in the hills east of Verona in the newly enlarged part of Valpolicella. Terre di Pietra is a reference to the particular varieties of stony soils distributed between the different vineyards called “pierre de Lessinia” and is a tiny estate of just 4.5 ha with some vineyards in the Classico heartland (in Torbe di Negrar) and some in Marcellise. These vineyards are over 40 years of age and have been cultivated pergola style and in addition to these a recent guyot cultivation in 2012. The Marcellise vineyards provide full bodied, smooth and a well-structured wine whereas the ones in Torbe are marked by acidity and freshness. All the work in the winery is done manually with respect for the grape variety and the terroir. Harvest happens in the first 10 days of October. The grapes are picked in cases with maximum 15/20 kg each. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with temperature control. Farming is organic – they started official conversion in 2011.
‘Piccola Peste’ with its lovely label drawn by one of Cristiano’s children, is a blend of Corvina 40%, Corvinone 30%, Rondinella 20%, Molinara 10% from the estate’s youngest vines in both both Torbe di Negrar and Marcellise. 8 months in steel tanks, 12 months in bottle and a further year in bottle before release, this is a joy to drink. It is supple, honest style with incredibly pure cherry fruit and despite being light-bodied, when aerated for a while, this shows surprising depth.
