“The Blauburgunder Mazzon (Pinot Noir) is a super-classy wine laced with sweet red cherries, flowers, spices and mint. There is something utterly beguiling about the 2008 that make it very hard to put down the glass despite the wine’s understated and at times reticent personality. This is a great showing from Gottardi. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Wine Advocate

The hill of Mazzon in the Alto Adige, above the town of Neumarkt is without a doubt, a cru for Pinot Noir. The hill lies about 350m above sea level and enjoys a long, relatively cool ripening season, enabling the grapes to achieve a perfumed complexity. Mazzon is known by such romantic tags as ‘Il cielo di Blauburgunder’, or ‘Il paradiso di Pinot Nero’.
Bruno Gottardi is known in Austria as a great wine expert and wine merchant with shops in Innsbruck and Vienna. Recently, he has also acquired a reputation as an excellent wine producer. In 1986 he bought Sarnheimhof, a winery located in the village of Mazzon. Having replanted the vineyard, training the vines on wires, he built a new winery, and in 1995 produced his first vintage.
The Blauburgunder Mazzon has subtle notes of juniper, and dark fruits with a touch of savoury meatiness. The palate is has a velvety fullness with the fruit fanning out on the lengthy finish
