Founded in 1971 by Di and Kevin Cullen, the winemaking is now managed by their daughter Vanya. Passion and a strong sense of responsibility to the land define Vanya’s biodynamic approach to viticulture, while pioneering environmental initiatives led to Cullen becoming Australia’s first carbon neutral winery in 2007.
The grapes for this wine are biodynamically grown in the Cullen and Mangan vineyards, with both cane and spur-pruned crop and canopy management. No leaf thinning is generally required and the average yield was 6.2 tonnes per hectare. For this vintage 54% was from the Cullen vineyard and 46% from Mangan. The soils here are old, granite and gravely sandy loam, overlaying lateric subsoils. The Cullen vineyard was planted in 1971, 1976 and 1988, while Mangan was planted 1995 and 1997.

‘Pale bright straw with green tinges. The bouquet is amazingly complex for such a youthful wine, exuding attractive perfumed floral, white peach, citrus and pineapple aromas with an underlying minerality coming through in the mouth’ The winemaker
“One of the pioneers of Margaret River which has always produced long-lived wines of highly individual style from the substantial and mature estate vineyards. Winemaking is now in the hands of Vanya Cullen; she is possessed of an extraordinarily good palate. The Chardonnay is superb, while I would rate the Cabernet Merlot as Australia’s best. ” JAMES HALLIDAY
