FRAMINGHAM Vineyards, Marlborough
Framingham is a quality-driven boutique producer located in Marlborough. Winemaker, Dr. Andrew Hedley has been lauded by influential critics like Jancis Robinson for his mastery of the aromatic varietals, Riesling in particular. One of the really exciting things about Framingham is that they are increasingly experimental and less interventionist in their approach, and are making more terroir and vintage-expressive wines every year.
The success of recent vintages of the Sauvignon Blanc may be attributable to this less interventionist approach, and the style is diverging from the raft of one-dimensional, identikit Sauvignons that have become ubiquitous over the last ten years. In a recent Decanter Magazine tasting, Framingham’s Sauvignon Blanc won Christelle Guibert’s top spot for New Zealand Sauvignon.
The Classic Riesling is quite simply, delicious: off-dry, balanced by very precise and fine acidity, this is light bodied at only 11.5% alcohol by volume, and very pure and balanced. Mosel-like in its fruit purity, minerality and structure, it is versatile as an aperitif, or with light and Asian-inspired foods. Complex on the nose showing mandarin, honeysuckle, jasmine, green tea and lemon citrus aromatics along with some wet stone-like minerality. Intense, concentrated, yet delicate palate with tight, juicy acidity showing flavours of lemon citrus, mandarin and stonefruit with hints of ginger and pepper, complete with a stony, mineral finish.
