Meyer-Fonne, Alsace Grand Cru RIESLING Wineck-Schlossberg

€42,95

A Riesling of such weight and concentration of subtly layered flavour, it begs to be tasted in order to be believed. Riesling Wineck-Schlossberg, is grown on south-facing, steep slopes of mica granitic soils. Very expressive nose of peppery aromatic herbs, pineapple, anise and flowers. The palate is dense and thick but vibrant, with soft citrus and elderberry flavours lifted by some unabsorbed CO2. Really resounds with minerality, mandarin orange and pepper on the back end. Obviously this makes an incredibly gastro white, however for us it's one to decant and take down really slowly over the course of a lazy afternoon or evening, listening to good music or whilst engrossed in a novel.

A soft touch of mandarin with a little zesty lemon zing on the nose leads onto a very full-fruited palate made up of juicy tangy mandarin notes. With a little air, they become ever more aromatic and fragrant. Concentration and freshness accommodate the smidgen of sweetness well and the zesty flavours make sure this reaches a dry finish.

MEYER-FONNÉ, Katzenthal
Within few years, Félix Meyer has built a solid reputation in Alsace. Working extremely hard in the vineyard, keeping yields ridiculously low, the immense potential of the granitic soils of Katzenthal is reflected in every single of Félix wines. No other grower in this part of Alsace produces wines with such precision, depth, purity and expression of terroir.
Vinification takes place in traditional large “foudres”, on fine lees similarly to Leonard and Olivier Humbrecht with whom Félix worked for several years before returning to his 12-ha family estate in 1992.

“Félix Meyer is one of the more ambitious and successful young vignerons of Alsace. Furthermore, his prices are very reasonable.” Wine Advocate

“ ... Félix Meyer still has humility, still has a sense of wonder, and is still capable of self-criticism. He is a seeker and a perfectionist. Quantities are limited because while he makes several different cuvées, the domaine has only eleven hectares of vines. He is a terroirist, and when he speaks of a granitic soil, the wine in your glass tastes of it.”
