Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2012

Category: .

‘ Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 1994 – Just 900 cases made of this: the previous regime was producing 5000. Beautifully focused dark fruits with lovely intensity and fruit expression. Excellent balance. This is still young, beginning to develop complexity, with cherries, blackcurrants and herbs.’ Jamie Goode 94/100

ROBERT PARKER REVIEW: The 1994 Vintage Port may be the finest regular vintage port I have tasted from this house in decades. Sadly, the production was absurdly small (approximately 800 cases) as the new owners, France’s AXA, want to make a qualitative statement – immediately. Opaque ruby/purple-colored, with fabulous purity and richness, full body, moderate sweetness, layers of jammy fruit, and well-integrated alcohol. There is some tannin in the finish, but this is a large-scaled, authoritatively flavored as well as elegant example of port that needs cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2035. 95pts

WINE SPECTATOR REVIEW: Muscular and ripe, showing fabulous potential. The best Noval in decades, it’s full-bodied, with a fruity character, well-integrated, chewy tannins and a medium finish. A long-term wine that needs age to mellow. 95pts

The 2011 Quinta do Noval has wonderful precision on the nose with blackberry, cassis, intriguing flinty notes and a whiff of smoke. It might not possess the power of the Naçional but it has freshness to spare. That comes through on the beautifully composed palate, which is underpinned by fine tannins that lend it a silky smooth mouthfeel. There is real intensity here, but it is very controlled with superb minerality on the finish. Excellent. Tasted May 2013.  (5/ 2013)

A powerful, concentrated wine, full of dark tannins, ripe fruit and rich texture. This is a wine based on a solid structure—very firm in character while still allowing the gorgeous fruits to express themselves. It’s obviously destined for long-term aging.  (9/ 2013)

Blueberry and wet earth aromas. Full body, medium sweet and a long finish. Balanced and refined. 2,000 cases produced of this foot-trodden wine. Try in 2022.  (5/ 2013)
Jancis Robinson
Just 2,200 (12-bottle) cases of the potential for 6,000 to maintain quality. Very dark purplish crimson. Notes of dried undergrowth and heat. Very high toned, marked acidity and lift. Not especially sweet but very sinewy and ethereal. 18+/20 points.  (9/ 2013)
